PROBLEM OCCURRED
Consider the design of
aluminum bicycle frames. A prototype model failed in fatigue after 1600 km of
riding, whereas most steel frames can be ridden for over 60,000 km. Describe a
design program that will solve this problem.
INTRODUCTION
A
prototype model of aluminum frame bicycle failed in fatigue after 1600 km of
riding, whereas most steel frames can be ridden for over 60,000 km. In order to ensure that bicycle frame need to be improvised. Step of engineering design process illustrated as below.
PHASE 1: CONCEPTUAL DESIGN
Conceptual design is
the process by which the design is initiated, carried to the point of creating
a number of possible solutions and narrowed down to a single best concept. In
this phase, it consists of different steps to generate the idea for the product
which are problem definition, gathering information, conceptualization and
concept selection.
PHASE 2: EMBODIMENT DESIGN
Embodiment design is contain of all the main
function that must be performed by the product. It is in this design phase that
decisions are made on strength, material selection, size, shape, and spatial
compatibility. This design phase is sometime called preliminary design.
Embodiment design is concerned with 3 major task- product architecture,
configuration design and parametric design.
In order to ensure that the engineering design and development in right track, the project flow chart must me create and be follow. For this project, the flowchart as follow:
PHASE 3: DETAIL DESIGN
In this phase, the design is brought to the stage of complete engineering description of a tested and producible product. All of information needed for the production will be provided at this phase. The information as follow are crucial in order to avoid any rejected output at the production. They are :
- Detailed engineering drawing
- Verification testing of prototypes data
- Assembly drawing and assembly instruction
- A detailed Product Specification
- Detail of supplier/manufacture for the material
- Detail design concludes with a design review before the decision is made to pass the design information on to manufacturing
